VMware Data Recovery backup operations fail with error -3948 vcbapi exception

If you try to backup with VMware VDR and receive the error -3948 and the following conditions are true:

  • Backing up a virtual machine with VMware Data Recovery fails
  • You see the error: 
    -3948 (vcabapi exception)

The solution for this problem is to be found in false naming resolution.

Login to the console of the VMware VDR box and try to ping

  • Your VCenter Server
  • The ESX Host the system tried to create the snapshot from

Typically you need to fix the DNS Servers or the entries in the DNS Servers.

If fixing DNS is not going to solve the issue we would suggest you add the hosts to /etc/hosts

Once this is done retry running the backup
